tai chi, yoga health?

id like to know if the health benefits ive read about tai chi are for real or are they just made up to support teachers of the art. how does the medical profession view the practicing of tai chi.
really id like to know if it is worth practicing rather than practice it for some time and find out id wasted time, effort, money.
same question re: yoga or any isoft style/internal martial arts.
