Singing audition songs
Choosing songs to practice singing is different than choosing singing audition songs. When practicing, the idea is to expand your vocal technique and you do this by challenging yourself with songs with broad ranges. But songs for the audition should highlight your strengths and accomplishments from all those long hours of practice.
The best scenario for your audition is to have one ballad and one song that is up-tempo.When it’s time to choose your songs you should look for songs with a story and plenty of range. Singers are usually ballad lovers or ballad haters. Those singers that only love up-tempos usually agonize over their choice of the ballad. When you choose a ballad, pick one that you can really relate to and the slow tempo areas will not seem so long. Choosing the songs will probably be the hardest part of your audition. Choosing songs that are really perfect for you and that show off your talents is an art. Although it’s not easy, it’s a great idea to expand the repertoire of songs you’re comfortable singing.
The number one priority when picking your songs is to have plenty of variety. This will allow you to bring forth a well-balanced set of songs. Why not start with some high notes in the first song and then try a belt song afterwards to show your versatility.
Find songs that show off your strengths as a singer, and try to find variety within each song. If each of your songs has a narrow range, search for songs that allow you to show off some high notes right after you sing your belt song. Remember that range is the highest and lowest note that your voice can get to and all the notes in between. The biggest thing that you want to avoid is having every song be the same kind of character and same kind of vocal sound coming out of your mouth, because the auditioner won’t get to see that you’re a skilled actor who can sing and play different kinds of roles and can add variety and spice to your character’s life throughout the show.
It’s possible that you will be asked to sing a pop song, but if you want to show variety then go back in time to early musical theater songs, later songs, and anything else that would bring forth a different appeal. Many times singers will confine themselves to contemporary songs. That’s a great start, but keep on looking for songs that are written in or are meant to portray an earlier time period.
When you have your audition, remember that everyone will have their eyes on you. Show them how great you look in your outfit and remember that personality and charisma will set you apart from everyone else. Take into account what the character looks like. You want to suggest the character but not dress exactly like the character. If you don’t get the part the first time, you still want to make the best possible impression. It’s possible you will be asked to come back for a second audition, so be at your best every time.
